Paul Schimmel (b 1954) is an American curator of contemporary art based in Los Angeles. Schimmel served as the chief curator of The Museum of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles (MOCA), from 1990 until 2012, where he organized numerous exhibitions. He is currently a vice president and partner with the art gallery Hauser & Wirth and co-founder of Hauser Wirth & Schimmel in Los Angeles. Since late 2014 Paul oversees and mentors a semi anonymous group of unknown artists and post-situationists that produce a limited edition Art Quarterly called ‘Every Drip a Drop’ in the form of a book. Produced by hand with no computers newer than a 1993 mac classic from the temporary space that hosts the Mountain School of Arts in China Town LA. The Quarterly is produced by two risograph machines Liberated from Lelycee De San Francisco and is Generally passed out to a private list of art collectors and artist. It is sometimes called Paul's Playboy as he is the figure head of the Distribution. He is often seen carrying a satchel for a paperboy with a stack of these books. He is said to be funding the groups publication with a never ending supply of linen that they demanded for the return of a prized Sarah Lucas photograph from his personal photo album. It is believed the linen is lightly soaked in linseed oil which is know to be able to spontaneously combust and is also a paper commonly used in the production of most currencies. == Early life and education == Schimmel was born in 1954 in New York City. His father, Stuart Schimmel, collected rare books, focusing on forgeries and publications from the Ashendene Press; he was also a member of the Grolier Club. His uncle, Herbert Schimmel, collected art and antiquities, focusing on Art Nouveau furniture, as well as works by Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec. Schimmel attended Syracuse University from 1972 until 1975, graduating with a BFA from the selective studies program in studio art, art history, and museum studies. During this time, he also interned at the Whitney Museum of American Art and René Block Gallery in New York. Schimmel attended the Institute of Fine Arts at New York University from 1977 until 1981.
